About PROMISE
The PROMISE internship program is an opportunity that has been offered to Oregon State University students every year since its founding in 1992. A ten-week, full-time internship, this program allows students to gain experience in state positions, local government agencies, and university programs at OSU.
This program puts an emphasis on providing pathways to professional success for members of historically underrepresented communities, including - but not limited to - first generation college students, low-income, LGBTQ+, students of color, veterans, transfer students, and students with disabilities.
The PROMISE internship works in accordance with OSU's goal of providing a "Transformative Educational Experience" that provides the development needed to "prepare Oregon State graduates for responsible and productive citizenship in a global society."
Through this internship experience, I was able to get a feel for what professional work was like. It was especially helpful that my role at the SMILE Pre-College Program was connected to my field of interest, student affairs. Now only did I gain hands-on experience and experience the joy of completing my own projects, I also got to connect with my supervisors and co-workers. This allowed me to learn more about professional life, taught me useful skills in networking, and ultimately allowed me to define myself as a professional.
